Naah. Everyone got excited, but later found it was just gas. The cardinals had too much northindian raajma-rice for dinner.

No. This being "Maagha" maasam, the cardinals must have been cooking rice pudding on cow-dung cakes to offer as "naivedyam" to the Sun. The blue-black smoke is the result of those cowdung cakes being lit.
