India was lucky to have avoided an intractable situation. it is fortunate that Italians realized the foolishness of their stand. even though Indian govt says otherwise it will do everything possible to waterdown the case. however supreme court may feel otherwise.

Whatever the final verdict is, the "President" will pardon them quietly when some other issue rages on.

India has no guts to throw two white military men in jail with the gang rapists and mass murderers.

If there is a standing agreement with Italy to allow its citizens to serve out their term in their country, in case there is a conviction, India should abide by that. If not, there should be no special favors for these guys. I do think it is appropriate for the defense to raise the issue of jurisdiction now and back up its contention that the event took place in international waters. This should be easy to sort out one way or the other.

It could be that the Eitalians are assuming a 3-mile sovereignty line - like the US and West, while India is assuming a 12-mile border like the Chinese in interpreting the location of the killing.

Remember the US-Chinese confrontation a few years ago off the Chinese coast?
