"The 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has told
interrogators that the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan motivated
him and his brother to carry out the attack, according to U.S. officials
familiar with the interviews."

"The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe an
ongoing investigation, said Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan
Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid
capture, do not appear to have been directed by a foreign terrorist
organization."

it is still early days and much will come out in the coming weeks and months. early indications are that this was motivated by jihadist aspirations and the resentment against US wars in afghanistan and iraq, but it seems completely home grown. in that sense it is no different from any of the other gun massacres in the US.

if that is the case, here is the central question that the US govt and the public are going to have to deal with -- why the overreaction about this bombing and why the calls for the perpetrator to be treated as an enemy combatant? had wade michael page lived, would he be treated also as an enemy combatant?
