the white ribbon

movie by a german (austrian?) director. saw it in bits and pieces earlier but saw the full movie yesterday uninterrupted. it was supposedly shot in color but presented in stark black and white and is about life in a strictly protestant feudal village in north germany, pre WW1. it explores the roots of what could have created the generation that would become fascists and other nazis. I found the director's oblique attempt to tie strict imposition of religion is what created the right circumstances for fascism to rise interesting. Dont know what's uniquely German about that tho...

highly recommend it if you can take bleak nietzschean nihilism and the creepy and unsettled atmosphere that the director creates with his style.

Well there is choir music in the film. Among all Haneke films I've seen, I liked this the best. Acting also was fantastic!
