I thought he threw out the China- hacking bit to buy him insurance that HK/China won't give him up. Looks like it did buy him enough time to get out, with HK not detaining him based on some technicality in the US request. With HK (read 'china') wanting to have some words with the US on this and the US expressing displeasure at HK's letting Snowden go, this is not going to be a pretty sight in the world of diplomacy. In the meantime, it looks like Ecuador was a back-up plan along which he is now pursuing, with Assange brokering the deal. Cuba/Venezuela may also be in the cards, although that would fly in the face of what Snowden says he stands for.

GOD knows what he was thinking when he got carried away by his maverick impulse and revealed the secrets to the media.

I bet that Snowden in his heart of hearts knows now that he screwed up badly.

But he does not want to spend 20 years in a prison.
