[nenu] dal recipe Empty [nenu] dal recipe

1 cup toor dal
1.5 litre water
salt
turmeric
3 bay leaves
3 whole red chillis
1 tea spoon cumin


wash dal and put in pressure cooker with turmeric and salt. cook to 4 whistles.
use a dal masher/blender (see this pic below -- it's called an egg beater i think) to mash the dal. if you find it cumbersome, you can skip this step (often we skip it).

in the kadhai:
2 tbs mustard oil
add bay leases
after a few seconds add whole red chillies.
after chillies gets a bit burnt (30 secs.) add cumin.
once cumin turns golden brown, add dal to the kadhai (in a departure we are are adding dal to the tadka and not vice versa).

boil for 5/7 mins on low flame.

eat with rice.

Thanks a lot HK. I so craved for dal and rice after seeing your pic that i made it for dinner yesterday night. I didn't follow sny recipe. I added five cups of water to two cups of dal and pressure cooked. Then i added ghee snd jeera seasoning and salt to it. It was good. Didn't mash. I am going to try this authentic recipe next time. Thanks for sharing it Smile

mom: what do i do in prep of your visit? what all do you want to eat?

me: nothing, just regular food. I have already gained a lot of weight, don't want to gain more.

mom: WHY did you gain more weight? WHY didn't you control?

me: It gained by itself, maybe.

mom: all right, only dal-roti for you then.
