"laying pipe" Empty "laying pipe"

Post by Propagandhi711 Mon May 02, 2011 12:13 pm

heard on this conf call by this female sales exec: "I am already setting expectations with the customer - laying pipe so to speak"

I chortled at this point, before I could hit mute. although in her 40s, she looks good in her pencil skirts and heels. would love to lay pipe to her.

I think a copy of Urban Dictionary must be handed with employee manuals from now on.

I am tempted to start using 'laying pipe' more often in my company and turn it into corporate lingo.

I get irritated by corporate lingo. Last year, heard a lot of people use 'circle back'. This year, I have started to hear 'nett-nett'. Was in a meeting couple weeks ago where an executive used 'nett-nett' in every other sentence! Drove me crazy.

What new phrases have you guys been hearing in the corporate world?

not too many, but I did do a double take when I heard 'synergy' a few weeks back. Took me back a decade ago, when it was the must-used term in the interviews.

Leverage. I hate the word leverage now. It means very specific things in physics and in finance, but people in my profession use it to mean anything they want it to mean.

That's definitely a 'paradigm shift'

"closure to the issue" - why not just use resolve

C'mon, don't tar all these babies with the same brush - I so depend on many of them for obfuscation and digression.

Anyway, circling back, throwing under the bus and changing gears are just plain ole American idioms. Cloud-ready, SOA, paradigm shift and synergy would qualify as jargon.

One of my clients (who was CFO at a public company) was fond of saying "true dat!" whenever he liked something someone said. Was funny the first two times he did that. Problem is, he did that a few times every day for 3-4 months.

No, but our trades share many common traits. Just finished my first meeting for the day, and I already used "inflexion point", "net-net", "process cloud"...these were only the words I kept track of - there would be a zillion other pieces of jargon and space-fillers that I wouldn't even be conscious of spewing.

Changing gears(!), I just noticed this MIT smiley for the first time... Exclamation
