A friend of mine recently returned from Dubai (one of the more progressive places in the region). He said there were lot of cats in the city, but he didn't come across a single dog.

Muslims believe that angels don't come to a house where dogs are present. So, the average mian thinks that dogs are a sign of death!

May be they got the idea from the pagans in Arabia (they, like Hindus, believed in a Kalabhairava type creature associated with death) who were killed off by Dr.PBUH.
