Dosa - Made in China
Soon Chinese may give Indians a run for their money on dosas. Play the video, it's an interesting way to make dosas.

That is a crepe. Not a Dosa. I had a posted a video of something similar a while back. Here is another such video from Japan:

More than the "dosa" itself, look at the griddle (penam) on which it is made. In our house, we have a Griswold cast-iron griddle (I bought at a side-walk sale). It has a mirror finish to it. You can make a dosa without adding any oil and it comes out like a paper dosa in a restaurant! If you find a used one without scratches, buy it. For making dosas, it is the best.

1) That is not a dosa or a dosai or anything else in the video. It is a crepe.Seva Lamberdar wrote:"what are you wowing?" HA

2)The word is dosa. Check the menu of any Saravana Bhavan.

three questions:Seva Lamberdar wrote:"what are you wowing?" HA

"what do you think?" Brig. HK

1) do you not know what max will decide?
2) if max does decide, will you buy his choice?
3) are you merely trying to needle max?

i've come to believe it probably originated somewhere in k'taka, probably udipi and was originally called neither dosa nor dosai, but dosAE. the AE ending in kannada is cognate with the ai ending in tamil. the kannadigas being the nice non-confrontational people they are, accepted the northindian version without the extended vowel, seeing how allergic northindians are to vowel endings, and even started referring to it amongst themselves by the shortened name which has stuck. tamils of course like to stick out like a sore thumb.
anil kumble is the exception, and what an exception!

PS: Saravana Bhavan did not get your memo about sticking out like a sore thumb.

Looks like Telugus also call it the Udipi way (Dose). I have heard Tamils arguing that Dosai is the proper word. Hmm...MaxEntropy_Man wrote:i've come to believe it probably originated somewhere in k'taka, probably udipi and was originally called neither dosa nor dosai, but dosAE. the AE ending in kannada is cognate with the ai ending in tamil. the kannadigas being the nice non-confrontational people they are, accepted the northindian version without the extended vowel, seeing how allergic northindians are to vowel endings, and even started referring to it amongst themselves by the shortened name which has stuck. tamils of course like to stick out like a sore thumb.

On a side note, in a Telugu movie, a woman asks her next door neighbor, "dosEsuko" (have a dose) when he comes to eat at her house. Her husband sees a double meaning in "dosEsuko" (rob my virtue) and wonders if his wife is after the guy!

Re: Dosa - Made in China
it's not a question of being the proper word, it's a question of consistent transliteration. the ai ending in tamil is the consistent cognate of the AE ending in kannada. vadAE in kannada is vadai in tamil, thalai (head) in tamil is thalAE in kannada, army (or troops) is padai in tamil and padAE in kannada. so if you want to transliterate dosAE consistently, it IS dosai in tamil.Vakavaka Pakapaka wrote:Looks like Telugus also call it the Udipi way (Dose).
