Prashant Bhushan is the lawyer for the Sharma fellow who is harassing the woman. He is just being a loyal lawyer to his client. His defence of his client has nothing to do with AAP. If Tulasi defends a criminal in the court, does that mean Tulasi is being straightforward? If Jethmalani represents Laloo in fodder scam, does that mean he is being BJP man?

The case is still going on, so Sharma is not a convicted criminal. Prashant is saying false cases were foisted on Sharma by Modi. Prashant refers to the tapes where Amit Shah is heard telling Singhal that Sharma must be put in jail for longer than Vanzara (after filing false cases).

SC did delete the para with the reference to Modi's girlfriend but Prashant says at that time Sharma did not know about the corroboratory evidence of these tapes which had been recorded by Singhal which depict Singhal taking orders from Amit Shah and which also mention the girl's name. The tapes show that Modi was keen to know details about the boys/men the girl was meeting. Not only that, even the phones of the girl's father and mother had been tapped.

One last point: The girl's father has said that he himself had told Modi to put his daughter under surveillance because he was worried for her safety (and following this the crime branch, anti-terrorist squad, regular police, etc. all started stalking this girl--in flagrant violation of the rules and regulations concerning surveillance). But the girl's father does not mention Sharma's name anywhere. Furthermore, the girl's father's statement was given to the BJP (as per the BJP claim) within an hour of the story being released and then the BJP went to the media with the father's story. The story had not mentioned the girl's name, so why (and on whose behest) did the girl's father jump in to the picture ?

The father doesn't need to mention Sharma's name. Also, why would the father go to Modi for protection of his daughter if Modi is the culprit? Looks like we just have to wait and see what is going on. They are digging up something from 2008 or 2009 just before the election! I still think that CONartists are worried because Modi is doing well right now and Pappu is looking like a liability. If CONs win only in Meghalaya and lose in the other 4 states, they are better off to drop Pappu and think of a better strategy for 2014.

The father claims he had gone to Modi to put his daughter under surveillance. The truth, as Prashant Bhusan says, is that after listening to the tapes one get the very clear and distinct impression that the father could not have ordered the large scale snooping on his daughter where every movement of the girl, who she was meeting, etc. was being scrutinized. If the girl was in danger from Sharma, the correct thing to do would have been to assign some security officers to protect the girl rather than spying the girl in a surreptious way, checking who the girl is calling, who is calling the girl, and monitoring her movements and activities with the help of the crime branch, anti terrorist squad (ATS) and the CB CID. All the agencies meant to ensure law and order in Gujarat and maintain safety and security of people of Gujarat were involved in monitoring the activities of this one girl.

So why is the father now saying he had asked Modi to put his daughter under surveillance ? Because the father lives in Gujarat. And because when the CM of Gujarat makes a personal request to you to do something for him it is not easy to say No because you know that if you annoy him he has a thousand ways of getting even with you and making your life miserable.

The controversy billowing around prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over whether his government spied on a young woman in Gujarat escalated sharply today.

Pradeep Sharma, a senior bureaucrat from the state, told NDTV that he has asked the Supreme Court to order the Gujarat government to explain whether he too was placed under surveillance.

In 2010, Mr Sharma was suspended by the Gujarat government and then arrested on corruption charges. He told NDTV that he was "persecuted" because he knew of the relationship between a top Gujarat politician and the woman whose identity cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

In 2011, he was granted bail...

The BJP has retaliated that surveillance for the young woman was ordered because her father, who knew Mr Modi personally, was worried that she was being stalked by Mr Sharma.

However, Mr Sharma claims that it was he who introduced the woman's family to Mr Modi, and that they had no long-standing association, as claimed by the BJP.

The BJP over the weekend released a letter from the woman's father stating that he was concerned about his daughter's safety while she was staying at a hotel in Ahmedabad, and asked Mr Modi to ensure "she does not face any problem."

Hours after the tapes were aired last Friday, the BJP had issued a statement from the woman's father, identified as Pranlal Soni, that he had "orally requested" Modi to "take care" of his daughter.

Sharma claims this is an old letter. He told The Indian Express: "My conjecture is that they obtained the letter from the father in 2011 and, in panic, released it after the tapes were aired."
