Waheeda Rehman gets centenary award

.... Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman, who was given the Centenary Film Personality Award, got a standing ovation from the crowd.
In its opening ceremony, the festival scored with an engaging performance from dance maestro Birju Maharaj who choreographed a string of Indian classical dance performances from Hindi films. From Madhubala's Mughal-e-Azam performance to Madhuri Dixit's Devdas, Maharaj encapsulated the 100 years of Indian cinema culminating in his own performance on the rhythm of sitar maestro Ustad Nishat Khan.
I&B minister Manish Tewari called the festival a reiteration of the idea of India and a celebration of human spirit against the tragedies of the present century. "What we really seek to reinforce (through the festival) are the values of pluralism, diversity, democracy, freedom of thought and expression and the ability to challenge the conventional that the founding fathers of the modern Indian state strived, struggled and stood for," he said.
The only spirit-dampening aspect of the event was the absence of Bollywood A-listers and poor presence of quality filmmakers, an aspect that has dogged the festival for years. Apart from some eminent members of the film fraternity such as Kamal Haasan, Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, Ramesh Sippy, Nana Patekar and Rekha, the attendance largely included lesser known or past-their-prime personalities such as Rani Mukherjee, Jackie Shroff, D Venkatesh, R Madhavan, Paoli Dam, Ramya and Prem Chopra among others.
The event was also punctuated by several slip-ups such as Susan Sarandon being ushered to the middle of the stage and left wondering what she was supposed to do, the Goa CM calling the veteran actress "Susan Saridon" and the organizers forgetting to felicitate jury member Victor Bannerjee only to rush in at the last minute.
