A legend in SI films, Akkineni Nageswara Rao passed away today. He acted in Mayabazar, Devadasu, Anarkali, etc.  A great actor.

It looks like the people's tastes have changed. Back in those days people supported and enjoyed such a variety of movies like Mayabazaar, Dasarabullodu, Mahakavi Kalidasu, Missamma, Jayabheri, Devadasu, Vipranarayana, Batasari, Seetaramayyagari Manavaralu, etc. Nowadays they enjoy only - blood, gore, unrealistic fights (skinny short hero bashing a dozen bodybuilder-type type baddies), and item numbers with famous lines like "povvoi povvoi antadu auto apparao," "kevvu kEkaaa," etc.. If you deviate even one inch from that formula, the movie is headed for disaster. Heroines don't speak their lines, and the heroes sound awful with their slangy lines even if they don roles of well educated persons. Nageswararao must have suffered a lot to live through all this in his later years. Death must be a great relief to him. May his soul rest in peace.

Unlike Gemini Ganesan and MGR, ANR was a levelheaded family person. No one would believe that he only had grade 3 education.

ANR and shobanbabu are a cut above the rest of film crowd, genuinely nice guys that were also committed family men with a brain. a huge rarity
