Bharatanatyam in Kashmir Empty Bharatanatyam in Kashmir

Bharatha Muni who wrote the Naatya Shastra--the theoretical work on which BN is based--is said to have been a Kashmiri. Further, the only traditional commentary available to us on the Naatya Shastra was written by a Kashmiri who lived all his life in Kashmir and who definitely had students who had come all the way from Tamil Nadu to be his disciples. This is the commentary on the BN:

This suggests that Bharatanatyam originated in Kashmir wherefrom it travelled to TN through tamil disciples of a Kashmiri thinker/philosopher/aesthete or his predecessors. Of course, it was later developed further and perfected by the Tamils. But the Kashmiri contribution to present day BN cannot be ignored altogether.

BN dancers should consider including in their performances dancing to Kashmiri songs as a way of paying their tribute to the Kashmiris due to whom this art form originated.

The Kashmiri who wrote the solitary existing traditional commentary on the Naatya Shastra was Abhinavagupta. Abhinavagupta's tamil disciple Madhuraja has left behind the following description of his teacher:

The intimate connection between the Naatya Shastra (NS) and BN is indisputable because there exist old temples in TN on which BN postures are engraved and these correspond to descriptions of dance postures given in NS.
