Shikhar's technical flaws could land him in trouble: Azhar

"I had observed Shikhar's problem with short ball when he played for India in the Champions Trophy in England. There he scored runs and it was not noticed but I had an idea that this would create problems. Shikhar does not have the proper technique to play short ball. He has a flaw in his basic technique," Azharuddin told PTI in an interview here today.

Asked to elaborate on Dhawan's problems, the 50-year-old former captain explained, "Firstly, he doesn't leave the rising deliveries and has a tendency to awkwardly fend at it which is wrong".

"Secondly, he stands outside the crease which is the reason he meets the rising delivery early which is also a mistake", he said.

"The more you use the depth of the crease, it helps you play the ball late. A 145 kmph delivery's speed will reduce by a few kms if you stand inside the crease".
"Where is that boy Umesh? He is there in the squad and is a better option than Ishant Sharma. Why don't they play him? Also I believe that it was a good decision to leave (Suresh) Raina out. He has got enough chances and some of the others now need to be tried out before the World Cup.

-> You can do that when ball doesn't rise above knees but not in SA or NZ but he is even struggling with the white ball wonder if it is more of a confidence issue than technique.

Didn't he do well on India A tour of SA which happened 1-2 months before the recent tour of SA? Also, how did he do so well in the champions trophy in England? Didn't bowlers attack him with short deliveries then?

I guess Steyn& Morkel softened him up. You can't really count ODIs, there are so many restrictions + the white ball.

It is surprising that India tries to improve shikar dhawan , raina , and to some extent rohit sharma but ignores a fully technically equipped pujara and a proven opener vijay . scoring fast is important but when you cannot score at all, a fast 20 is not good enough in international matches.

Shikar is pretty new compared to Raina & Rohit and has been reasonably successful so I'm okay to give him a bit of rope.
Aside, I don't remember Azahar commenting on any of the cricket players or anything cricket for that matter, does this mean he is returning to the fold.
