Re: THURSDAY CRYPTICS - 1/30
10. A fat army officer eats a lot here in mess. (11)
hint: w-in-w + anagram
C (HOLESTER) OL ---- (s lot here) - anag.
Set solved.
I am not sure if you can set up an anagram using a contiguous letter or a contiguous part of a word (like the "s" here) together with the following word(s). Or is it a must that you always use complete words in setting up an anagram. Any thoughts?

As a non-expert, my opinion is that unless you are giving a hint that only a part of the word is being used like a head or tail, it is not valid.
