A WOMAN who escaped from jail more than 36 years ago has been arrested. Judy Lynn Hayman must have thought she had got away with it after breaking out of Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on April 14, 1977. She had a new identity, lived in another part of the US and had given birth to three sons. But the now 60-year-old woman received an unwelcome knock-on the door at her unit in Hillcrest, San Diego yesterday (AEST), ABC's 10News reported. San Diego Police Department acting on information from Michigan corrections officials arrested Hayman after being given an address and a description. Initially Hayman claimed it was a case of mistaken identity, showing documents bearing her alias Jamie Lewis, SDPD public affairs Lt. Kevin Mayer said. She eventually caved in and admitted who she was. Her 32-year-old son Aaron, who was in the unit when police officers arrived, seemed "quite surprised" by the revelations about his mother, Her son Aaron, told NBC 7 that he was surprised and worried for his mother, although he did not confirm or deny if he knew that she was leading a double life. Aaron said his mother lived a life outside of her home, to parent teachers association meetings and church. Hayman's next-door neighbor described her as a quiet person who appeared paranoid and kept to herself. They would talk about both being cancer survivors, she said. Hayman was taken to Las Colinas women's jail in Santee, San Diego, and was being held without bail pending extradition proceedings to Michigan. Hayman pleaded guilty in June 1976 to a larceny charge in Wayne County, Michigan, and was sentenced to serve between 16 months and two years in custody, according to prison officials. She escaped 10 months later.
