New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa faced more flak on Thursday for her move to release the seven convicts in the killing of Rajiv Gandhi with the BJP saying it is 'unconscionable' and Congress cautioning against politicising the issue.

The second issue I don't understand is this 14 year time frame being considered enough to meet the lifetime requirement. If that is the case, why not award a 14 year punishment explicitly. It seems like doublespeak. Finally, the SC/Gov't has to revisit the state government's authority to reduce or nullify punishments. Local political considerations can, as we see in this case, compromise any ruling under this scenario. As to this issue, I agree with Rishi, these scumbags should have been hanged a very long time ago.

I'm not sure whether you know the details of this case. They were convicted not based on any hard evidence.. One person who was supposed to have hanged, Perarivalan, his only crime is in buying the battery from the shop that was used in the making of the bomb. He was convicted based on his own "confession" that he knew where the battery is going to be used. He has always claimed that he never knew and recently the police officer who wrote Perarivalan "confession" out of guilt accepted that he changed the so called confession. Now this guy has spent 23 years in jail for the crime which he did not commit and he would have been hanged if not for the recent judgement. That is the quality of justice in India.

People who killed Rajiv Gandhi are dead and the masterminds are either dead or not found. 23 year jail sentence is enough for the crimes they have committed (if at all they have committed it in the first place). It is hard to believe anything in the Indian police and justice system.
