NEW DELHI/VADODARA: The BJP came out in defence of yoga guru Ramdev on Saturday over his remarks that Rahul Gandhi goes to dalit for "honeymoon", and said he is a "saint" whose words should be viewed in the context in which they were made and not as per the perception of Congress leaders.

"Ramdev is a saint. When he selects words like honeymoon, which is an English word, the context should be understood and its usage seen and not be misconstrued ... It did not have the kind of meaning as Congress leaders were viewing it as per their own perception," BJP spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain said.

Another BJP leader Udit Raj, a dalit, said Ramdev has not said anything "wrong" against dalits and his intention against them was also not "wrong".

And this is what Ramdev had actually said:

LUCKNOW: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Friday resorted to low, vulgar attacks against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. He said, "Rahul used to go to the dalit households to experience honeymoon. And if he had married a dalit ki beti (dalit girl), then by now, who knows, he might have become the Prime Minister of India. I wonder why he is not marrying a dalit girl."

Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Ramdev said, "Rahul's tryst with bad luck has just started. He is not inclined to get married to a desi (an Indian) and he and his mother know that the Congress vice-president will not become the Prime Minister if he marries a foreigner."

Ramdev added, "It seems that Rahul is virtually running out of luck."
