i subscribe to a pop science magazine called american scientist. it recently had an article with some deeply sketpical views about the role of simulation in astrophysics, quite the opposite of the views expressed in the hindu article. it expressed significant unease about whole conferences devoted to discussion of datasets derived wholly from computer simulations. the difficulty in astrophysics of course is that one cannot run controlled experiments, but the solution to that cannot be that one accepts simulated data as a basis for hypothesis testing. the problem with this approach is that one cannot postulate falsifiable hypotheses.
