Neocons that keep bashing Obama that he is all talk no action, indirectly hinting at Reagan, could use a bit of introspection . If not for Gorbachev, Reagan wouldn't have been half as successful, wonder how he would've dealt with someoone like Putin; Besides he didn't even had to deal with cleaning up mess (midst of two wars) created by his predecessor who left the country in dumps (housing crisis comparable to great depression). Given these circumstances Obama did a commendable job bringing the country & economy back on track and resisting any temptation to another unnecessary aggression; war weary world, especially Europe, wasn't even ready to support any military action on Russia and Obama wouldn't stoop to Dubya levels to cook-up false WMD style stories. Eventually, affordable care act will be a success and he already paved the road for minimum wage raise, which will help shape his legacy.

The Reagan Doctrine: The Reagan Doctrine was the first major break with the idea of containment that Truman had articulated nearly four decades earlier. Rather than simply aiding non-communist governments, Reagan upped the ante: Washington would actively assist rebels attempting to overthrow communist governments, including the Contras in Nicaragua and the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan.  “Support for freedom fighters is self-defense," Reagan argued.

This is as close as we have gotten to an Obama Doctrine, and here it is : The United States “will use military force, unilaterally if necessary, when our core interests demand it — when our people are threatened; when our livelihoods are at stake; when the security of our allies is in danger.”

Not exactly.. I found it ironic that conservative Reagan was Islamist sympathizer. Success of a policy is measured on its long term utility. These days, Nehru is routinely criticized for his policies and I think one should extend the same courtesy to Reagan as well. After 25 years (hindsight or not) one can argue that his foreign policy was a blunder. If you ask an average American as to which 'ism' would they tolerate more "Communism or Islamic terrorism", I think the answer is obvious. Just as China reinvented itself, the USSR would've reinvented itself as a quasi-communist country and the world probably would have been much more kind to the US.
