India hasn't qualified for a football world cup in ages and still Indians watch football world cup so religiously. Imagine the frenzy if they ever qualify.

Is it mostly a poor people's sport? Unlike tennis or cricket which require raquet, bat, balls and other equipment, all it takes to play soccer is a ball. And in slums in Brazil and such I heard they just tie rags together into a ball as they cannot afford even the ball. Don't understand why European countries are fascinated with soccer, though. Perhaps their desire to prove that they are way better than the slum dwelling Latin Americans fueled their initial interest in the sport.
