Hindi-English controversy and the Gujarat model
Hindi is the mother-tongue of only a quarter of the population, while the staggering majority speak Tamil, Kannada, Santhali, etc. as well as languages like Marwari, Mewari, etc. which census Hindi enumerators cunningly classify as ‘Hindi’ to give false impression of Hindi’s numerical might. Certain rootless urban classes born in non-Hindi/English homes earn cosmopolitan brownie points by their ‘inclusiveness’, which basically means shunning their mother-tongues and birth-culture. The Union government is only too happy to promote this brand of ‘Indianness’ where Hindi/English is the ‘mainstream’, and other linguistic nationalities are marginalised as ‘regional’ (Tamil isn’t a ‘national’ language because of the subcontinent’s British-manufactured administrative unity). It increasingly has the gall to communicate to non-Hindi people in Hindi. Fortunately, the primary life goal of most self-respecting non-Hindi people is not to desert their mother-tongue to make Hindi/English speakers feel ‘at home’. They have the right to live, be aware, dream and prosper in their mother-tongues.

merlot was not far off the mark when he remarked that the teeming northindian young will be the future nursemaids and drivers in southern indian cities. that looks to be the way things are shaping up.

You expect Hindian migrants to Tamil Nadu would learn Tamil. Actually they do not learn Tamil and expect locals to learn Hindi.
They see Hindi signs everywhere on trains, post office, banks. They have more Hindi shows on Indian gov TV than Tamil shows.
These uneducated people think all India knows Hindi. They really think so and surprised and angry in tamil Nadu.
Actually store owners, bus drivers learn Hindi to serve these Hindi migrants. So Hindians flowing north propagates Hindi along with Indian gov requirement all its employees pass Hindi tests or "dealt with SEVERELY"

In Texas there are many Latin American workers who speak only spanish. There is no pressure on them to learn English. Their employers know spanish or learn spanish. All texans are encouraged to learn spanish.

You are right.... For ex...with the increasing numbers in mexicans in US, they dont make an effort to read/write English. They can live their daily life without knowing English. That is making the local English speakers upset and become anti-immigrant. Not any different from the Marathi charge against the Tmailans in the 60s and 70s.
Of course, the same Hindians who expect Tamil migrants to the narrth to learn hindi , expect the local tamil employers and people to adjust to the hindians when they migrate to Bangalore and Madras.

It is already happening. Karnataka is promising.. In similar facebook groups , kannadigas are the most active.. They have realised that they have been fooled by the three language formula and are trying to come out of it.

I am convinced Hindians are stupid. Hindi has grown leaps and bounds in the South out of Southies own interest. If Hindians had kept their mouth shut for another 50 years, Hindi would have been a comfy language in the South as well.
Now, the stupid Hindians have to injure the Southies with their Hindi sword - the only method they have learnt from their Muslim masters of a 1000 years.
Kannadigas are acctually violent when it comes to their language and not like Tamilans who did not attack hindians in Madras and Coimbatore even in the 60s.

While some Kannadigas come out opposing Hindi, why are their elected ministers silent? In TN, chief minister speaks up against Hindi at least now and then. Why not Karnataka ministers?

The members of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike organization, laid siege on the theater which had released the film ‘Velayudham’ and resorted to hooliganism. Also, they tore of the banners of actor Vijay. Since the audience were evacuated the shows were cancelled.
The film ‘Velayudham’, starred by Vijay, was released in theaters on Deepavali. This movie has been screened in several theaters including one Radhakrishna theater in R.T. Nagar, Bangalore.
As is the situation, the members of Kannada Rakshana Vedhike organization headed by Praveen Shetty laid siege on the Radhakrishna theater which screened the film ‘Velayudham’.
They tore of the banners showing Vijay. Also, they behaved cheaply by stamping upon the banners. Moreover, since it was the eve of Karnataka Rajyothsava they were very strongly against the release of other language films including Tamil and threatened not to screen those movies.
Also, they evacuated the audience from the theater. Following this, shows of ‘Velayudham’ were cancelled yesterday. Those who had come to watch the movie returned disappointedly.
Regarding this Praveen Shetty comments, “We have decided to celebrate the Karnataka Rajyothsava occasion for a period of one month. Until that, only Kannada movies should be screened in Bangalore. Other language movies including Tamil should not be screened. We have written a letter to the Film Trade Association and Karnataka government.’

Until 1967 even the Tamilnadu ministers and chief ministers never spoke against Hindi imposition. But what started as a spark spread like wildfire in TN, and Congress or rather any Hindian party can never form a government in TN. I see similar history repeating itself in Karnataka, hopefully just Kannada parties like the Deve Gowda's get the clue and champion this cause.
After Tamil was awarded the useless classical language status by the union government, Kannadigas and Telugu people fought for getting classical tag to them as well. Now that they are seeing the game Hindians played by foisting on them the three language formula they are wisening up..
