Tolerance and non-violence are two doctrines of religion. No religion has advocated the taking of lives. Not Hinduism, not Jainism, Not Buddhism, not Sikhism, not even Islam. In his book Reading the Quran, Ziauddin Sardar has beautifully demolished many misreadings about Islam. Describing war and peace, the Quran says ‘fight in the cause of god those who fight you, but do not commit aggression: god loves not the aggressor.’ Sardar says the ignorant misinterpret these lines. The phrase ‘in the cause of god’ has nothing to do with fighting for faith, which is not mentioned in the Quran. Neither does the verse ‘until persecution is no more and religion is for god’ (v 193) have anything to do with the domination of Islam and the subjugation of nonbelievers. According to Sardar, the only possible justification for war in the Quran is self-defence.

Here is Sardar: “Real terrorists, including Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda operatives, also quote this verse to justify their nefarious actions. The same is true of the Taliban and other fundamentalist groups in Britain and abroad. The verse they cite reads: ‘We will put terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. They serve other gods for whom no sanction has been revealed. Hell shall be their home’. (3:149). Now how are we to communicate to these people that the apparent meaning attributed to this verse could not be further from the true spirit of Quran? The verse in fact addresses the Prophet himself. It is revealed during the battle of Uhud (625) when the small and the ill-equipped army of the Prophet faced a much larger and well-equipped enemy. He was concerned about the outcome of the battle. The Quran reassures him and promises that the enemy will be terrified by the Prophet’s unprofessional army. Seen in its context, it is not general instructions to all the Muslims, but a commentary on what was happening at that time.” So, where is the discord between Islam and Hinduism? Both religions believe in the moral responsibility of an individual and in the practice of charity, righteousness, forgiveness, moderation in eating and drinking, tolerance, compassion, brotherhood, patience and gratitude.

Certainly, neither Maulana Merlot and rashmun-Al-Akbari nor their Tora-Bora mentors buy that.
