tamil made compulsory for grades 1 to 10 in TN
i don't remember a discussion about this on this board: http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/article1204732.ece
looks like someone opposed it and it went all the way to the supreme court where the petition against it was rejected. any updates?

THe law was passed around 2006 starting from grade 4. Now it is up to Grade 11. Some private schools filed a law suit in high court. I think the decision is pending.
In Karnataka court ruled that Kannada medium up to F=Gradee 4 is illegal. In TN it is not Tamil medium, it is learning Tamil as a language. That is under court review.

i think this is a fair law. kids born in tamil families will learn tamil as their native tongue. however the children of northindian CLRI scientists and IIT professors will be denied the opportunity to learn the local language because of their parents' reticence towards tamil. this law will ensure that they will be on an equal footing in TN with the tamil kids.

If this law is not quashed, it applies to CBSE and metric schools. Does not apply to Kendriya Vidyalayas where many of these NI send their children.

it survived one challenge in the supreme court. we'll see. why did the k.vidyalayas get a special dispensation?

I think KVs are operated directly by central gov and so TN rules do not apply.
CBSE schools operate under the central board using their syllabus but operated by private companies/people.

Kendriya Vidyalayas are the central govt equivalent of State run corporation schools - administration wise. Most of these KVs operate within the compound of central Govt institutions and enterprises - and hence, fall under central govt jurisdiction (like the IITs, BHEL, NLC, etc.).
Despite the TN Laws, these KVs might still not be affected.
