Modi hails Assam CM Tarun Gogoi for 'Swachh Bharat' campaign Empty Modi hails Assam CM Tarun Gogoi for 'Swachh Bharat' campaign

Post by Seva Lamberdar Mon Oct 06, 2014 8:35 am

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar for participating in 'Swachh Bharat' campaign and said the mission can be made successful by working together.

"Glad to see Assam CM Tarun Gogoi ji inspiring the people of Assam to work towards a Clean India," Modi tweeted.

In another tweet, he said, "I congratulate @sachin_rt for his efforts", referring to Tendulkar wielding a broom and cleaning up a street in Mumbai to participate in 'clean India' campaign.

"Together we will make Swachh Bharat Mission a success," the Prime Minister said.

Modi, while launching the campaign on October two, had invited Tendulkar to participate in it.

Responding, Tendulkar had tweeted, "I humbly accept the challenge".

This is nothing but political/publicity stunt; serves no other purpose. Like someone said what a colossal waste of highly skilled individuals time & productivity. If Modiji indeed is serious about cleanliness he should start getting the wheels of bureaucracy churn faster and concentrate on providing necessary tools, resources for them to get the ball rolling, otherwise all this dramabazi is mere symbolism.

cd, this initiative to clean up India is much needed. However, we'll have to wait a few months to see if there has been an overall improvement in sanitation (at least in government quarters) before we call it a drama. Don't you want to see a cleaner India?

Look, CBN took a similar initiative in the late '90s/early '00s forcing all state govt. employees to participate in a monthly sweeping exercise which went nowhere rather had every state employee turn against him and caused him to lose in next elections. Wonder these two dimwits went to the same school, seems to have no concept of productivity, if anything Modiji should regularly contribute with a broom, as that seems to be the only skill he is good at, that is when he gets free time from harassing minorities.

I totally disagree with you.
Cleaning and keeping clean the surroundings should be recognized as the important part of job by everyone, especially those holding key positions in society and corporations etc.
In fact, all the public service competition interviews should include a part where the candidates have to clean a public toilet in the building before being promoted to the next stage of the interview.
I can cite so many examples which clearly show that many officials in India don't even notice that there is a serious problem about cleanliness in India (including the situation of dirty toilets etc.), and they have no clue on how to improve the things. This "swachh bharat" campaign is a good first step in educating them on this very important issue.

By this logic, Modiji should lead by example, he should clean his office himself for the next 5 years or however long he is in PM kursi.

If Modi is aware of the issue and he knows how to do the job of cleaning himself, he will be able to demand the same from others. If someone is unwilling to participate in it (making sure that the office and the surrounding area, including the office washroom etc., remain clean and functioning properly), kick the guy / gal out of the job.

Yes! Yesss! he should do that, I fully support that idea. What better way than kicking Modiji out of PM job.

Modi already seems to know about the need for clean surroundings (including clean public washrooms etc.), otherwise he wouldn't start this campaign for "swachh India".

Just because CBN was ineffective doesn't mean Modi too will be. India badly needs cooperation from the general public on cleanliness. Who is better in setting an example than the PM himself? Rather than accepting the typical throw-the-garbage-anywhere Indian mentality he is doing something about it. Rather than cursing the darkness he is at least trying to light a few candles.

GC, It is more of a government/municipality capability than civic sense issue. Municipality truck won't collect garbage from the bin near by my parents house regularly, what are they supposed to do? All these govt. servants can sweep roads everyday but where are they going to dispose the trash off?

Garbage disposal is a huge problem anywhere in the world and India is no exception. Perhaps burning is a solution. In any event, if the problem is inadequate workforce in the municipality, Modi ought to do something about it in central government funding to the states.

Somebody has to make a political statement and need to walk the talk and Modi ji is doing that. BTW, Modi ji, cleans his own room.

The blame lies with the airlines - how do they expect passengers to cramp up for 6 to 10 hrs at a stretch. Free market does not mean squeeze the passengers. Tharoor was right. This should be clubbed under human rights violation.

Impressive slogans, heart-warming television footage of netas and babus wielding the broom and celebrity endorsement – is Swachch Bharat Abhiyan only about this? A week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the campaign with a bang to make India squeaky clean by 2019 and decided to set an example by picking up the broom himself, nothing seems to have changed dramatically on the ground. In fact, things remain pretty much the same.
The condition of BR camp, a slum cluster in the vicinity of 7 Race Course Road, official residence of Prime Minister Modi, was even worse. Because of clogged drains, water was on flowing on narrow roads. Rotten garbage made breathing difficult. Children were defecating in the open.

Although 29-year-old Bittu, who has been living in the area for the past 10 years, praised Kejriwal and his team for their cleanliness drive on 2 October, he believes one-day effort cannot change the whole picture.

“The NDMC truck comes here to remove the garbage dumps once in a blue moon. The whole area, which houses thousands of huts, suffers severe sanitation problem. Neither the civic authorities nor our elected representatives bear the pain to visit this area,” he said.

To hell with all those pessimists and cynics who want to fault with everything that Modi does! The 'Swacch-Bharat' campaign is a campaign of awareness in recognizing the importance of cleanliness and getting more proactive in keeping one's home and surroundings clean and tidy. It's a movement. Everyone got to be involved. It takes time to break old habits, but it's been started. That's a good thing and it needs to be appreciated.

Modi hails Assam CM Tarun Gogoi for 'Swachh Bharat' campaign Empty Re: Modi hails Assam CM Tarun Gogoi for 'Swachh Bharat' campaign

Besides, Purna Swachhata is not just about litter. As Professor A.K. Gosain, Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Delhi, who is working on issues of urban sanitation, says, Purna Swachh requires three things to be addressed. The first is sewerage or wet waste generated from bathrooms, for which we need a proper system of sewers and sewerage treatment plants; the second is storm drainage or rain water, for which water tables need to be recharged through natural and man-made water drains which remain dry during the monsoons; and the third is solid waste which needs to be dealt with through landfill, incineration, and so on. Given the range of tasks that need to be undertaken, just sweeping litter from the roads under the carpet is not going to solve much.
Besides, action at the level of individuals is clearly not enough. Sanitised and clean public spaces are a public good and have to, by definition, be provided by the state. It is worthwhile reflecting on the broad swathe of interventions, including pieces of legislation, which accompanied sanitary reform in Britain and other industrialising countries about 150 years ago. First, the sanitary movement involved linking cleanliness with sanitation and water supply — one cannot happen without the other. Second, it established the inescapable links between public health and sanitation in the form of a Public Health Act, initiating the idea of public health districts with sanitary inspectors and public health officers. (It is important to note that the only State in India that separates public health from medical departments is Tamil Nadu.) Third, it made municipal authorities responsible not just for cleanliness, but for health (given the necessity of one for the other) in cities, with a gradual transition from permissive to compulsory legislation.

this is not an initiative; it's a perfunctory scratching of the surface by about 12 people among 1,200,000,000 people, and these are people who can afford to have bathrooms and toilets in their homes, and to have them cleaned by workers. they are not "cleaning up india"; they are cleaning about 50 square feet of ground area once in their lifetime.
