Earlier Modi had declared he would adopt Kakrahiyan village as a model village and develop it accordingly. Later he changed his mind and adopted another village ( Jayanagar) as his model village. The caste composition of these villages seems to have determined his change of mind.

"Kumar, who is also a local BJP leader, claimed that Jayapur is already a developed village. "Its roads are perfect and it has a degree college, a hospital, a big market and even a petrol pump well within 5 km radius," he said. "But Kakrahiyan is very backward. It has none of these facilities and the condition of its roads is so poor that even to reach our nearest market at Lohta, which is merely 2 km away, we have to take a long detour of 10 km."

"Modi, Kumar claimed, "wants a ready-made model village, where he won’t have to do any work".

"BJP officials in the area told Scroll.in that the last-minute change was related to Modi’s attempts to keep members of the Kurmi caste in good humour. While Kakrahiyan is dominated by Thakurs, Jayapur is dominated by Kurmis."

>>> Read the above (from the article) carefully. The things don't add up.  If Modi played the caste card by picking the village of lower caste people (i.e. Jayapur) instead of the upper caste people's village (Kakrahiyan), as you claim, how is that Jayapur (the village of lower caste people, Kurmis) is more developed than Kakrahiyan (village of upper caste people, Thakurs)?

Kurmis are not exactly low caste. They are completely on par with Yadavas in terms of caste nomenclature. As to why a village dominated by kurmis is more developed than a village dominated by thakurs I don't know the reason(s). Moreover this is irrelevant in my opinion. What is relevant is: why pick an already developed village instead of a less developed village for further development? Second, why pick a village dominated by kurmis? The answer to the second question is that Modi and BJP are keen to win over the kurmi vote in Uttar Prasesh. That is why they had allied with Apna Dal, which is casteist party representing the kurmi caste, in UP. The idea is to make the kurmi caste a part of the BJP vote bank ( like how they made lingayats a part of the BJP vote bank in Karnataka by allying with Hegde). Kurmis comprise around 10% of the population of UP.

Irrelevant. My point is that in Karnataka lingayats had become supporters of Hegde ( I do not know why) and subsequently they transferred their support to BJP after Hegde's death since BJP had become an ally of Hegde.
