on my maternal side we were (no longer since my grandfather's passing) agricultural land and farm owners. since his passing, everything has been sold in the village except the ancestral home which we still hold on to for sentimental reasons and use when we visit neighboring temples.

As a kid I fondly recall the times when the candyman used to come by our street in Madurai carrying a wooden pole on top of which was a very thick and well-twined glob of green, pink, blue and orange stretchable candy. For just a few paisas he'd take the time to make you a wrist watch, a snake, a butterfly or whatever else you wanted while sharing some humorous stories. We used to look forward to his visits both for the candy and for his stories. I wonder if such vendors exist today in Madurai.
