An example of the cultural unity between Tamil Nadu and Kashmir Empty An example of the cultural unity between Tamil Nadu and Kashmir

It is said ( even by many Tamilians) that the Naatya Shastra--the theoretical manual which forms the basis for the Bharatanatyam--was written by a Kashmiri. Specific descriptions of certain dance postures in the Naatya Shastra are found depicted in sculptures in some of the important temples in Tamil Nadu like the Nataraja temple at Chidambaram which is acknowledged to be more than a thousand years old.
Now the interesting thing to note is that dance is a sub-set of what is contained in the Naatya-Shastra. Besides dance, the Naatya Shastra also mentions and describes plays/dramas to be enacted with dialogues (instead of dance moves). Now, this part of the Naatya Shastra continues to be a living part of Kashmiri culture. The plays which are enacted to this day in Kashmir and which seem to have evolved from the days of the Naatya Shastra are known as bhand pather.

So one element in the Naatya Shastra forms a living part of tamil culture while another element of the Naatya Shastra forms a living part of Kashmiri culture.
