Nor should such religious violence come as any surprise given that convincing believers to use peaceful protests to stop provocateurs is something that took the West several centuries to accomplish. Indeed, until 1925, England was imprisoning rationalists and atheists under its blasphemy laws. Had Andres Serrano tried to exhibit Piss Christ — his picture showing a crucifix submerged in a jar of his urine — then, he might well have triggered a murderous rampage. Nor are violent tendencies confined to monotheistic religions. Even Hindus in a modern-day democracy like India routinely resort to violence to avenge real and imaginary religious insults. Death threats by Hindu fanatics drove Muslim painter M.F. Husain into exile in 2006 after he portrayed Hindu deities in the nude. And just this month, they burnt theaters screening PK, a movie lampooning blind faith in scripture-wielding gurus.

It might be politically incorrect to say this, but the truth is that many cultures are simply not as far along in their journey toward the Enlightenment as the West. And until they catch up, such clashes will continue.

What the West needs to do until then is stay firm and set an example for the world by giving maximal space to its own people to exercise their freedom of religion — which France doesn't do given its prohibition on wearing burqas and other religious symbols in public places — as well as the freedom to blaspheme — which France also truncates through aplethora of laws making religious insults a hate crime. If Ron Paul wants to do something to advance the cause of freedom, he should be protesting such laws — not simplistically attributing every cultural clash to Western foreign policy.

Funny....whenever your fellow islamis are under attack or at the center of controversy you post threads on Sarah Palin or Rand-y-Ron.

Dont you have anything to criticize on BJP interference on the censor board and the Christian masquerading as a hindu, Leela Samson? You do recall her past controversy ordering removal of Ganesh and other hindu idols from Kalakshetra?

Please comment....

Both the Paris attackers fell under Beghal’s spell, hardening their attitudes against France, their home country, and convincing them of the need to wage war in the name of Islam.
It is a worryingly common phenomena across Europe, but especially in France, where at least four men now known to have been radicalised in prison have launched attacks on Europe in the past two years.
What is going on in France’s prisons?

Of the 67,500 people currently behind bars in France, it is estimated that 70 per cent are Muslim – when they comprise only eight per cent of the French public. It is illegal under France’s strict laicity laws to count the number of Muslim prisoners, but experts agree that the figure is an accurate average – with some prisons, like those near Paris and Marseille, seeing an even higher percentage. In England and Wales, Muslims account for 14 per cent of the prison population, according to Home Office statistics, and five per cent of the population nationwide.
French authorities state that 283 people are currently in prison for terrorism, of whom 152 are classed as dangerous Islamists. Sixty of them – almost all incarcerated in Paris – are deemed particularly dangerous.

Really....look at her in sarees and bindi...the image of a typical hindu woman in the eyes of any commoner, westerner, iSlami or a Christian - irrespective of whatever excuse/explanation you are likely to come up with. If she wore any other dress or put on a image she would not be heading Kalakshetra...There were a lot of articles 10 years ago about her during the student revolt on her "cleansing" campaign at Kalakshetra and changing its decades-long character

BJP is responsible for the Board's resignation - a "secular" board appointed by Sonia mata, and there is nothing wrong in throwing it out. There is no answer to the facts that Leela and the board never met after it was formed in May by the UPA. Why should there be a board.

Washington (AFP) - US President Barack Obama on Friday urged European governments to try to better assimilate their Muslim minority populations as they respond to extremist attacks like last week's shootings in Paris.
The US leader said the 2013 Boston marathon bombing showed that the United States was not entirely safe from jihadist cells, but suggested that it had had more success than others in integrating minorities.

"Our biggest advantage, major, is that our Muslim populations feel themselves to be Americans and there is this incredible process of immigration and assimilation that is part of our tradition," he said.

"There are parts of Europe in which that's not the case ... it's important for Europe not to simply respond with a hammer and law enforcement and military approaches to these problems."

And he added: "There also has to be a recognition that the stronger the ties of a North African or a Frenchman of North African descent to French liberties, that's going to be important over time."

>>>Right. In other words, law enforcement alone is not sufficient. In the long run, these populations need to feel they have a stake. With Europe, the degrees of success on this will vary from country. Multiculturalism is not their forte. You also have a problem with many of these immigrant communities (North African, especially) who are part of the underclass, since they came as laborers. The underclass parallel would be blacks in the US, although there is more chance of upward mobility in the US due to the economic system. One thing is certain, radicalism is not going to help in overcoming the adversities in the system. It will beget violence and ill-will and will broaden the chasm between the mainstream and the immigrant communities.

Am I complaining about Jesudas? Being a Christian and Jewish is not - at all - a problem. In fact, I am proud that a Jewish-Christian woman did that. It is to her credit that she is a masetro of a classical Indian Dance. But, using it to hoist her views and opinions and sneaking in her agenda and forcing it insidiously - in the name of secularism - at the institution that made her is despicable. And, that is cultural jihadism against hinduism.

Ok. Why did she ask for Hindu Idols to be removed if she thinks the art from came from the crucible of Hinduism ?

She played a partisan role in PK censor board, where she willfully ignored one censor board members views. As that board member suggested, it has resulted in an issue.
When Christian pastors intervened on OMG, she justified it to say that is ok as long as it is done before release. Why is it that Christian pastors were allowed access, and influence to edit scenes,
and the same courtesy was not extended to Hindus before release of PK ?
She is making a song and dance about her resignation.
She is partisan and deserves to be sacked.

The author is mis-informed, MF Hussain escaped out of India, because he violated the law. There were more than hundreds of cases that were filed against him across all courts of India. If he had stepped into India, he would have been arrested, and the cases on courts dragged to keep him in prison for a long time.

We can debate France's actions on Banning Burqa. One thing is  sure. France saved its future Muslim Nursing students Or their teachers, from being killed by Political Islamist zealots (as seen in Bangladesh), who force the dress down the throats of Muslim women and girls.

Just like you and the Pseudo-iSlamis are not satisfied with numerous exonerations of Modi, I am not satisfied with her BS explanations.

that would a reasonable response if you completely ignored her life's work of practice and service to the art of bharathanatyam. but given that she has spent her entire life in dedication to an art that is quintessentially hindu, this kind of criticism has no leg to stand on. context is essential in such considerations.

Yeah, focus on obfuscating some minor detail while ignoring glaring evidence of chaddis emulating the most intolerant Muslims and reshaping Hinduism into some bastardized Wahhabism. And then blitz us with your usual limpwristed Hindus-are-victims breastbeating. Great way to convince folks of the validity of your viewpoint.

The courts and the police, who never seemed to be on hand when criminals attacked art galleries, besieged Husain for more than a decade. The enemies of the secular Indian state were able to use its laws to undermine its principles. Censorship was not promoting harmony, let alone the interests of justice, but allowing sectarians to pick grievances out of thin air and order their goondas to avenge imagined wrongs. It took until 2008 for the Delhi High Court to throw out all of the hundreds of criminal charges against Husain, and warn: "In India, a new puritanism is being carried out in the name of cultural purity, and a host of ignorant people are vandalising art and pushing us towards the pre-Renaissance era."

By then, Husain had had enough. In 2010 at the age of 96, and after years of exile, he renounced his Indian citizenship.
