read the article and more importantly the comments on how difficult it is to own residential rental property

There are some real opportunities out there in the Bay Area now. Houses that are currently renting for $3,200 or more can be had for a price that at 20% down you can have for $2,500 in mortgage payment. That would mean putting down $150k or so, and that has some cost as well, but money is cheap right now and it is not generating a lot of return anyway.

It is pain in the neck. Very hard to find honest tenants, even if you did they won't last long. Eviction process takes months, and will have to go to court and all that jazz.

You live in the Dallas area, right? How is the scene over there? I read somewhere that Dallas is a good market for owning rental property due to low prices and decent rents?
