Finally, while every country’s situation is distinct, Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s Ruchir Sharma has identified a clear pattern that investors shouldn’t ignore. On average, emerging economies that have elected new leaders in the past two decades have beat the developing world’s average stock market returns by 20 percent, but only during that leader’s first term. By the second term, returns are back to average. By the third, they are underperforming by six percent.

To go back and look at the optimistic headlines these once-fresh faces generated might make us cringe. Remember the Putin rally? Or when Antonis Samaras was Greece’s savior? Not so long ago, Peña Nieto was on track to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity in Mexico. There is no guarantee that this generation’s leaders won’t be different, but investors should know what they’re getting into when they buy into Jokowi, Sirisena or Modi.
