NEW DELHI: In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that caste should not be the sole basis to decide backwardness of a community and quashed the Centre's decision to grant OBC reservation to Jat community.

The SC said that caste, though a prominent factor, can't be the sole factor to decide backwardness.

"Possible wrong inclusion of a caste in the OBC list in the past cannot be the basis of further wrong inclusions," the SC bench observed.  ....

They are as backward as any other potential backward who thinks that getting that type of designation officially (as "backward") from the Govt. will declare him / her eligible for the Govt. freebies (including the quotas in education and jobs).
