in a discussion with VC on sulekha you had explained why and how the shiva linga is depicted as an erect penis coming out of a vagina (and not going into the vagina--which is what should have been happening according to VC if the shiva linga were actually representing a male penis). could you please repeat your explanation. thanks.

Yeah its a depiction of the penis entering the vagina, as seen from inside the womb. Which explains why the sanctum sanctorum is called garbha gruha. Symbolizing the creation of life.
