I saw headlines about these protests but ignored them for several weeks. I am surprised at their staying power. Who are these people? What do they want?

Are these leftists? anarchists? Democrats in disguise? Reflection of Tea Party on the left?

Any explanatory article? Thanks.

mixture of libertarians, liberals and the usual kooks that are part of liberal groups that the democratic party would like coopt as their own version of the tea-party.

some of the occupiers' concerns are similar to the tea party; no make that identical -- e.g. reining in out of control banks. except because this time the voices are from the left, they are labeled as kooky. jon stewart had a delicious segment on this a few days ago. let me see if i can find it; here: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5fILJn1SXc). the whole clip is funny, but pay attention to it starting ca. 2:50.

their concerns are legit, but they need better focus and articulation.

the tea party and OWS are both expressions of unfocussed economic (out)rage/angst from grassroots ppl that had this strong sense they're getting shafted but unsure how. both tapped into the national zeitgiest simmering since the 90s fed by continuing string of scandals, large scale fraud, huge transfer of american jobs overseas, dot com bust, subsequent fed sponsored & financial institution engineered destruction and bailouts.

tea party got played by GOP who coopted their unfocussed ideals and largely marginalized them as extreme fringe kooks. both right (your fox news) and left wing (his highness jon stewart) media abetted in this and they're slowly or speedily on their way to disintegrating.

the dems will attempt and probably succeed in doing the same with OWS. dem mouthpiece the moveon.org will bully/cajole media into appointing them as defacto mouthpiece of OWS movement and will kill that movement off.

this shit happened several times in the past - the two party system is strong and will not change swayed by these pip squeak expressions of angst.
