CHENNAI: In a move to secure Tamil language a place in the global arena, academicians and Tamils across the world are planning to launch a ‘Sangam Tamil Chair’ at the prestigious Harvard University.
“If such an effort is restricted to Tamil Nadu, it won’t become known to the outside world. Since Harvard is a premier university, it will help secure Tamil language a pedestal in the global arena,” said Dr M Arumugam, professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and member of the Harvard University Tamil Chair Foundation Committee.
The department, if started, will benefit graduates and research students of Tamil, who may be provided high quality research publications. The appointment of a candidate to head the chair will be consequential to the global search instituted by the Harvard University for screening and selecting the right person having exceptional knowledge of the language. However, the cost of setting up the department will be $6 million, though the DMK chief has pledged monetary support to the Tamil Sangam and the members have managed to collect $1million.

“We are in talks with Tamils across the world, we are also preparing a proposal to be presented to the Tamil Nadu Government so that they too can help us,” Arumugam said.

“Even if one Tamilian donates a dollar, it will be a great thing as the university will get to know its importance, “ said ST Sambandham, President and Fellow of Harvard College and a member of the foundation.
“This chair will provide Tamil, one of the classical languages of the world, a bigger research space and the momentum to get exposed, explored and explained to the world. All we need now is support. Once that is done, our language will be the second after Sanskrit to occupy a place in the global stage,” said Arumugam.'

Kayal Vizhi's Note: Damn Indian gov is not giving a cent it is establishing Hindi chairs all around the world and helping establishment of World Hindi Center near New York City.

Those who can afford a few dollars please send some money to this worthwhile effort.  Over a decade ago we established a Tamil chair at University of California, Berkeley through private donations.

So what did the Berkeley Tamizh Naarkali achieve?

The new Naarkaali or Mukkaali @ Harvard wont achieve much either.
