I'm a kannadiga. Suaveness, understating, being modest, being educated are always the parameters to judge people.

So people from UP understandably annoyed me earlier. Crass, money-minded, bad English, drinking is common (this is considered to make a person somewhat bad : Kannada brahmin logic :-/), pushy, aggressive, somewhat wily, not intellectual at all, and basically not too intelligent.

Bihar : bad English, silent. This was perhaps because I studied in an NIT.

As I grew up further, I realized :

  • A lot more people, including other south Indians are exactly like that

  • Much of that is merely youthful exuberance

  • English doesn't make a person intelligent

So now I think,

  • UP : Somewhat aggressive(in a good way) go-getters (both in career and partners), prone to show-off.

  • Bihar : silent people who are at an unfortunate level of disadvantage in their English, and suaveness, neither of which I care about as much as I used to.

There you go. Prejudice. Most of it is gone, but I think some of it is true.

The picture that comes to mind is not very flattering. It is one of a less-civilized community of country bumpkins who speak in crass slang peppered with crude abuses, harass women in public with lewd catcalls, violently quarrel over petty issues, stay ignorant of modern science and technology, and waste their time sitting in internet cafes watching MMS porn clips and sending "fraandship" requests to unknown girls on orkut.
I do realize that this might be an inaccurate and unfair picture, but that is my honest impression based on my limited knowledge of the region. Also, this is more about UP and Bihar than the language Bhojpuri, which I am not familiar with as such beyond a few distasteful and vulgar music videos.
