Is the American Dream still alive? Empty Is the American Dream still alive?

Rick Santorum referenced a Pew project in a presidential debate, saying Europe has a greater degree of economic mobility than America does. I was surprised by that finding, and heard it restated by the woman who led the Pew Economic Mobility Project on KQED's Forum show this morning. Here is an interesting summary of the findings. The website http://www.economicmobility.org has a lot more details.

I wonder whether Europe has had this greater mobility all along, or if it caught up with and surpassed America lately. I can't seem to find any research that sheds light on this question.
