Arnab did not mention barkha by name but presumably he was talking about people like her. on her FB page Barkha writes:

Times Now calls for gagging of media & for journalists to be tried &punished. This man is journalist?I am ashamed to be from same industry as him. What's striking is his brazen and cowardly hypocrisy. So he drones on and on about Pro Pakistan Doves without one word on the JK alliance agreement that commits the BJP and PDP to talks with Pakistan and Hurriyat and is silent on Modi's own Pakistan outreach- neither of which I object to- but since Arnab Goswami measures patriotism by such views why is he so silent on the government? Chamchagiri?

Imagine, a journalist actually exhorts the government to shut down sections of the media, misrepresents them as isi agents and terror sympathisers, calls for them to be tried and acted against. And our fraternity remains locked into politically correct and timid silence. Well Im not a shrinking violet Mr. Goswami and no matter how many times you take my name directly or indirectly on your show, I really dont give a toss for your opinion. I hope I will always be someone whose journalism you loathe, because trust me, the feeling is so utterly mutual that it would kill me to be on the same side of any issue as you.

When responding to criticism of his laughably soft-focus interview of the prime minister, Goswami pointed out that he had been similarly soft on Rahul Gandhi. This is perhaps true. Certainly, it was true of his famous interview of Raj Thackeray. True or not, it is certainly revealing: in the presence of real power, the thundering lion of the Newshour is a polite little kitten. Let us not judge this choice. All I ask is that he stop pretending to be an intrepid, independent journalist. There is space in today’s India for a master of hate, for an establishment Rottweiler, and Goswami fills that space admirably. He should be proud how competently he carries out his real role. A role that involves being supine in front of people more powerful than he is, and a vicious bully to those lower down on the ladder.

Yet, sometime in the past year or so, Goswami’s bully act has turned into something even darker. I think I know when: the moment he cut off a JNU student’s volume the better to hector and threaten him, turning a rebellious kid into the object of nationwide hate. He put the boy in real danger, from state and non-state violence. Journalists are supposed to hold power to account, not take advantage of powerlessness.

Worse, perhaps, he betrayed a complete lack of empathy; and a journalist without empathy is nothing, an empty suit, no matter how loud he may be.

Goswami’s accusation that his fellow-journalists are agents of the Enemy is simply a marker of this transition. He was dangerous earlier only because he introduced a corrosive stupidity and divisiveness into the national discourse. He is infinitely more dangerous today, when he openly calls for silencing other voices, cutting off their metaphorical mics, leaving his voice alone and uncontested as the representative of the national interest.

Post-script: after reading my blog, an academic friend whose opinion I value greatly had this to say: for once i disagree with you. it is not an arnab- barkha war. it is not even about TRP and low journalism. It is about an anchor who lies, who sets vigilante mobs on people, surely it is the job of journalism to call this out....yes aim high, don't stoop low. not naming an evil for what he is is, avoiding the issue.
My response to him was: I don't wish to fight noise with more noise, but noise with truth. And the truth is, Arnab was a colleague. Decency doesn't allow me to say more, but I will say this: by calling for media 'gags' and seeking vigilante justice against dissenting voices, Arnab has let down the Indian media and chipped away at its freedoms. That he has done this with no hint of self doubt is both tragic and diabolical. But as an optimist, I remain hopeful that the dark storms will pass and the sunshine of good sense will break through. India and the Indian media is much bigger than any individual's hate filled hubris.

offering just, fair, and reason-based criticism is not the same as spewing hate. even Modi recognizes this. has Modi ever hit back at Rajdeep? No. Because Modi recognizes that Rajdeep's criticism has been just and fair.

While Narendra Modi did not give Sardesai an interview during the election campaign, he promised one to the journalist over the phone. “Arre, tumse koi dustman nahi, Rajdeep,” Modi said to him. But Modi is open about his animosity towards NDTV. Sardesai recounts how during a Network 18 event, Modi had said about NDTV’s Save the Tiger campaign that it got sponsorship because "the tiger was secular and maybe the lion was communal". He did not give NDTV an interview.
