Just when I thought this Trumpster fire can't get worse, it does:

“It was under Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton that changed the rules of engagement that probably cost his life,” spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said in an interview with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer.

Captain Khan died in 2004, during the presidency of George W. Bush.

Yeah, that is quite something. The very fact that Trump isn't polling 30% behind Clinton rings serious alarm bells about the health of politics in this country.

For one thing, Clinton is a flawed candidate (not a charismatic campaigner, not a good orator), and did some fairly stupid things (Goldman Sachs speeches she could have chosen not to make when she knew how they would play in the primary campaign, email mess and the overly clever parsing of the truth, etc.) A democratic-socialist without a party affiliation should not have stood a chance against a former Secretary of State and senator with such strong support in the party establishment. But he won more than 20 primary contests. And Democrats are not as enthused about a Clinton presidency as they are afraid of a Trump presidency.

For another, the polarization of the electorate is so thorough that a fraction of Republicans will vote for Trump even if he stands in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoots someone. Decades of gerrymandering and dog-whistle politics have brought the country to the point where the dog whistle has been discarded altogether by Trump to great effect in the primaries. If he wins -- or even comes close -- there will be imitators who will haunt the system for more election cycles. If he loses by a thin margin, the GOP will probably break into two or three pieces, and that will push the Democratic party further left, which is dangerous for the country. The only true hope is that Trump loses big and that conservatives take back control of the GOP.
