It is the law in many states that you cannot use phone while driving. The problem is enforcement. Unfortunately police involvement comes in most cases after an accident.

A massive campaign over a long period of time (aka Mother's against drunk driving) is required. The additional problem is teenage users.

A side issue is the irritation of being forced to drive behind a person who is using cell phone and slows down below speed limit.

just could not find when most of you are around. I join in late in the day or during weekends and put in my two cents. Today is use it or lose it type vacation day.

its just not the actual talking but the browsing and the texting with these smart phones. so, how is one supposed track this and enforce penalty? right now, i think in NJ it is not a "primary offense" which to me pointless because how many people would, after getting pulled over continue to talk on their phones?

Doing anything in the car besides driving can potentially be a distraction

eg ladies putting on their make up ; a couple fighting with each other

On the other hand if one steadfastly drives looking at the road in utter concentration one can fall asleep and cause a major 3/4 car pile up accident !

best to use a bicycle or a bullock car then pirat

But still ppl text and tweet and fb while driving. A rise in data plan rates will be good and a built in app that detects texting while driving and alerts the user "Siri alert!" (not listening to siri alert then siri will auto call the cops!" - would be good.
