1. Once there was a meeting of great sages in the royal court at the kingdom of Ayodhya. All great sages like Narada, Vasishta and Vishvamitra were present there.

2. The topic of the debate was if Rama’s own self was stronger than his name (Rama Nama). Lord Hanuman was also present in the court during this debate but he did not express his opinions.

3. Sage Narada had claimed that Rama Nama was indeed stronger than Rama himself, and that he would prove it. When the meeting was ending and the sages were dispersing, Narada went up to Lord Hanuman. He told Hanuman to respect all the sages but not Vishwamitra, since he was a king.

4. Hanuman greeted all the saints except Vishwamitra, who didn’t really seem to mind. But then Narada told Vishwamitra that Hanuman was deliberately avoiding him, and this angered the great sage.

5. In a fit of rage, Vishwamitra went to Lord Rama and demanded that Hanuman be killed for his unforgivable behavior. Vishvamitra was the guru of Lord Rama and so Rama could not refuse his orders. Rama set out to kill Hanuman.

6. Hanuman came to know of Rama’s intentions and was confused as to why Rama would want to take his life. But Narada told him not to worry and to keep on chanting the Rama Naam. When Rama came and confronted Hanuman, Hanuman was still chanting “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”. Rama shot his arrows one after the other but they did not hurt Hanuman at all.

7. Seeing all his weapons fail, Rama used the Brahmastra but that failed to. Rama was startled and started thinking of other ways to attack Hanuman. Meanwhile, Narad Muni who was watching the whole spectacle, admitted to Visvamitra that he had provoked Hanuman.

8. When Rama and Hanuman came to know about Narad’s trickery they stopped their fight. Thus it was proved that the greatness of Rama Naam was bigger than Lord Rama’s strength itself.
