I know a lot of people don't know how to read polls. So let me describe what these polls mean.
This poll has a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. What that means is:
- Trump's support is reported at 41.3%: we can say with 95% confidence that Trump's actual support level in the population is between 37.7% and 44.9%.
- Clinton's support is reported at 40.0%: we can say with 95% confidence that Clinton's actual support level in the population is between 36.4% and 43.6%.
What does that imply? If the actual margin Clinton has right now is 5 percentage points, and we do lots of random-sample polls, we should fully expect that some of them will report Trump with a 1-2 percentage point lead. The majority of the polls will show Clinton the lead though. That is why people use polling averages, or more sophisticated methods like fivethirtyeight.com does, to understand these poll results.
