jeremy brett
continues to amaze me with his thespian skills. i've watched over and over again his portrayals of sherlock holmes. so sad he was lost relatively young.
watch this ending of the six napoleons between 2.30 and 3.00. inspector lestrade praises him for his masterful cracking of the case and says how proud the scotland yard would be of holmes's work. just watch holmes's face (played by brett). amazing!

yeah i agree. in fact, any time i hear sherlock holmes, my mind conjures up jeremy brett's pale face. that was a phenomenally successful casting.

Re: jeremy brett
the problem with jeremy brett is that occasionally he raises his voice to the extent that it seems that he is shouting.
of course, jeremy brett looks like how i had imagined sherlock holmes to be. but i always believed the character would invariably always be cool, modulated, controlled--actually like Mr Spock.

i too like jeremy brett a lot but RDJ is just so sexy. sherlock holmes did not get such good reviews but will go watch it anyway for RDJ and the curiosity behind the portrayal of professor moriarty.

C'mon. Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be cerebral (although he is handy with his fists and is skilled in Bartitsu), not sexy. If you want sexy, go watch Ironman.

Oh don't mind me. I just get jealous when Impy gets all soft and gushy on RJD.

Re: jeremy brett
I watched all of Jeremy Brett's series on Netflix. He managed to bring the character to life. I also watched the latest Sherlock Holmes movie. It felt like a cross between a Bollywood movie and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The one thing that works in the new movie is the dynamic between Holmes and Watson. The rest is so not Sherlock Holmes.

Re: jeremy brett
Ive seen all of Jeremy Brett's serials in and as Sherlock holmes
He does shout a bit which I find hilarious.
I love that he is not above doing cocaine
plus plays the violin and hates it when there is no case to solve .gets bored easily
does treat watson badly
His brother is even cleverer than him

i had read every one of the holmes stories before i watched the first of jeremy brett's portrayals and i never got the impression that conan doyle meant for holmes to be cool, even tempered, and controlled like spock. doyle's writing showed him to be a cerebral but passionate and flawed human being in the end. his predilection for cocaine and his bouts of depression are anything but spockian. i think brett portrayed him in the way conan doyle wrote him.

--> even when he has the cocaine, he is apologetic about it to watson. he claims he has it out of sheer boredom when he has no work to do. watson berates him harshly and holmes never snaps back but accepts the criticism modestly.
--> i do not remember holmes ever getting angry except when he loses his cool momentarily watson when was shot and wounded (in 'the three garridebs') or when he is demonstrating a sham anger to deliberately intimidate (for instance, near the end of 'A case in identity').
--> watson in fact observes in 'three garridebs' that it was the one and only time in which he glimpsed a great heart in holmes. this is the relevant extract:
"Well, well!" said he
coolly as he scrambled to the surface. "I guess you have been one
too many for me, Mr. Holmes. Saw through my game, I suppose, and played
me for a sucker from the first. Well, sir, I hand it to you; you have me
beat and --"
In an instant he had whisked out
a revolver from his breast and had fired two shots. I felt a sudden hot
sear as if a red-hot iron had been pressed to my thigh. There was a crash
as Holmes's pistol came down on the man's head. I had a vision of him sprawling
upon the floor with blood running down his face while Holmes rummaged him
for weapons. Then my friend's wiry arms were round me, and he was leading
me to a chair.
"You're not hurt, Watson?
For God's sake, say that you are not hurt!"
It was worth a wound -- it was
worth many wounds -- to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind
that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the
firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of
a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded
service culminated in that moment of revelation.
"It's nothing, Holmes. It's
a mere scratch."
He had ripped up my trousers with
his pocket-knife.
"You are right," he
cried with an immense sigh of relief. "It is quite superficial."
His face set like flint as he glared at our prisoner, who was sitting up
with a dazed face. "By the Lord, it is as well for you. If you had
killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive. Now, sir,
what have you to say for yourself?"
--> here is an example that demonstrates what i mean when i say holmes never loses his cool (from 'the adventure of the speckled band'):
"Which of you is Holmes?" asked this apparition.
"My name, sir; but you have the advantage of me," said my companion quietly.
"I am Dr. Grimesby Roylott, of Stoke Moran."
"Indeed, Doctor," said Holmes blandly. "Pray take a seat."
"I will do nothing of the kind. My stepdaughter has been here. I have traced her. What has she been saying to you?"
"It is a little cold for the time of the year," said Holmes.
"What has she been saying to you?" screamed the old man furiously.
"But I have heard that the crocuses promise well," continued my companion imperturbably.
"Ha!
You put me off, do you?" said our new visitor, taking a step forward
and shaking his hunting-crop. "I know you, you scoundrel! I have heard
of you before. You are Holmes, the meddler."
My friend smiled.
"Holmes, the busybody!"
His smile broadened.
"Holmes, the Scotland Yard Jack-in-office!"
Holmes
chuckled heartily. "Your conversation is most entertaining," said he.
"When you go out close the door, for there is a decided draught."

Re: jeremy brett
raising his voice is not tantamount to showing anger. i don't remember jeremy brett protraying an angry holmes. his shouting on occasion is merely to emphasize a point or to show exasperation. bit of a red herring this anger business.

--> i can never picturise Holmes shouting to emphasize a point or to show exasperation, just as i cannot picturise Spock doing so. just my interpretation of the character.

Re: jeremy brett
just finished watching the new movie sherlock holmes ..wat the hell !!
Except for using the name sherlcck ,watson and moriarty it has no semblance to any story that Arthur Conan Doyle could have written nor did it fit into the era of the original sherlock
this is an american action movie like mission impossible or james bond
How on earth did it pass muster with the S H society in England ?
