Hindus believe that the interaction of the mind with the external world leads to attachment to, dependance on and identity with, the latter. "Vasanas" get built up and self-identity without the external attributes gets muted. Even while performing "Varna-Ashrama dharmas", individuals can acquire "vasanas" if they are not "satvik" in nature. In these people, not just the mind but also every organ and cell in their body adopts a behaviour pattern that is based on a misunderstanding that the external world of perception is the real one. Unless these are all corrected, it is impossible for them to attain moksha. For example, a young man sees an extremely good looking woman and his lingam decides to expand into the surroundings - here, it is not just the mind but also the lingam and its cells that are affected by the existing "vasanas"; until the "vasanas" are under control, the lingam will waste its energy! Therefore, for the common man, cremation is recommended - the belief is that in fire, all impurities will be burnt away.

Swamis are supposed to have moved on from all the outside interferences and devoted their time to inner discovery. Their minds, organs and cells are supposed to be clear of "Vasanas". For such people, there is no need to burn their organs and cells. So they are buried. The approach is similar for infants, etc., who die.

Cremation is more environmentally friendly.  Cremation is sensible and progressive, Rest of religious nonsense, Hindu or otherwise, is a bunch of bull. It is a real waste to build massive structures over dead bodies.

Rani Singh & tbt: I was responding to Fluteholder.

Yes, cremation is more environmentally friendly. These days, many in the West are opting for it. Cemeteries, in many cities, occupy expensive lands.

Looks like a good approach. India should quickly embrace the method and replace the cremation methods in Varanasi. They can just "purify" the body with all the chants, sprinkle ganga jal, put the sucker through the machine and give the remains to the family to sprinkle in rivers or wherever they want.
