I was going to post this, but never got around to it. A lot of Rasikas will be unnerved by unmooring the music from its religious home, but I think this is a welcome progression.  In a sense TMK is continuing what movies have been doing for a long time now. Examining sociocultural and environmental questions using music is brilliant.  Those of us who love the music and wouldn't like to see it ossify should support it enthusiastically. TMK is justifying the Magsaysay award he won last year.
