Modi, Trump & NRI patriots

The horrific shooting of Srinivas in Kansas, as pointed out by Mohan J Dutta from National University Singapore in an article in The Wire, draws some interesting parallels with the brutal lynching of Muhammed Ikhlaq in Dadri (Uttar Pradesh) in 2015. Both became victims of anti-minority violence and just as Modi’s otherwise busy Twitter handle went silent on Ikhlaq’s murder, so did Trump on Srinivas. Pressure and outrage finally compelled Trump to cough up a condemnation, but Ikhlaq’s death, however, continues to be mired in the debate over whether his fridge actually contained beef.

India’s home minister Rajnath Singh’s subsequent entreaties to the US government “to restore the faith of minorities” smacks more of hypocrisy than irony. An odd choice of words from the minister of home, moreover, given that loud noises about ‘minority appeasement’ have been central to Modi and the BJP’s majoritarian politics. Since the BJP government coming to power, in fact, minorities in India have on instance also been stunned by unexpected acts of ‘official pettiness’. Notably, the government’s decision to treat Christmas day in 2014 as ‘good governance day’.

In the US or India, violence against minorities is deplorable. However, asking the majority to think of itself only as the bad dude, won't work forever. I agree with the caution on tyranny of the majority but don't agree with the Sikularist strategy of excessive appeasement of minorities to garner votes.

In the US or India, violence against minorities is deplorable. However, asking the majority to think of itself only as the bad dude, won't work forever. I agree with the caution on tyranny of the majority but don't agree with the Sikularist strategy of excessive appeasement of minorities to garner votes.

In other words, killing someone in mere suspicion of holding on to illegal meat is perfectly justified because they're beneficiaries of excessive appeasement. Doesn't the same logic apply for the appeasement of beneficiaries of H1-B visas?

You are just Sikularly over interpreting what I wrote. Let me give an example - not implementing a uniform civil code because you don't want to hurt the sentiments of a minority (actually, don't want to lose their votes).
