How did this happen -- did Indian suddenly take to growing bananas instead of voting in elections?

in my opinion, this happened because Indian political leaders started practicing 'soft secularism' instead of 'tough/hard secularism'. People blame Rajiv Gandhi for this, but really I think most top political leaders of modern India are to blame (including Nehru and Patel). We should have been very tough on both hindu and muslim extremism from the very beginning. Uniform civil code should have been imposed from the beginning (immediately after independence), and RSS should have been banned and dispersed.
