Muralidhara even negotiated her own engagement ring, shaving more than $2,000 off the price. And when it came time to plan the wedding, they estimated their skills saved them $15,000-$20,000 dollars.
really? so, what percentage that savings of 15-20K, is of the money they spent on the wedding?

lol good point... maybe they splurged on desi wedding by other standards...
back in the 90s, i had a maharashtrian friend whose cousin manager her own wedding. She spent Rs 12,000 on her wedding. Yes, 12,000. In 1996. I had to ask again and again if this was just for the venue, or just food, or just clothes, or just gifts. Nope. 12,000. Including invitations, clothes, gifts, everything. Simply could not wrap my head around it. On the other hand, my marwari friends were getting married around the same time, and each outfit costed upwards of Rs 50,000.
Was watching comedian Sunil Grover's interview, whose in-laws did not accept their marriage, up until 1 week after they tied the knot, all expenses incurred by him and his family. He is convinced they did this to avoid wedding costs lol. why agree merely 1 week later. Should have sulked atleast 1 year.
i think i will also allow both my kids to elope lol.

One of my colleague in Mumbai, got married in a local temple with around 20 people (only immediate family members of the groom's and no one from bride's family as they did not like/approve her choice of groom). After the wedding they went to a restaurant for lunch. Later we (friends) arranged dinner at another restaurant. That was the cheapest wedding I have come across.
