i always liked Patri satish kumar's mridangam - just caresses it when needed, with perfect timing, in line with the krithis, sometimes even better than Umayalpuram Sivaraman. 

unlike most seeking attention, thrusting their presence by overpowering the vocalists - like Palghat mani and his school, uniformly treating even tender carnatic krithis like blasting 'koothu' songs.
