I think some of these practices can definitely be used to minimize energy consumption and environmental damage. However, I am not sure how practical a total back-to-nature approach really is. There must be psychological unintended consequences of turning the clock back a hundred years. Coincidentally, I recently watched a Malayalam movie where the family lived in a bungalow in a forest. The lush greenery looked tempting, but it seemed like the isolation would drive you nuts after awhile.
